The card is renewed every five years, but the status itself no longer expires.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"rejilla dos\">\n      <div class=\"tarjeta\">\n        <h3>How those five years are counted<\/h3>\n        <p>They count from the effective date of your current authorization, provided there are no gaps. Regarding absences, the general rule: no more than <strong>six consecutive months<\/strong> away and no more than <strong>ten cumulative months<\/strong> over the five-year period. If the absences are due to duly justified work-related activity, the limit is higher.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"tarjeta\">\n        <h3>National or EU<\/h3>\n        <p>There are two variants. The <strong>national long-term residence<\/strong> permit is the usual route. The <strong>EU long-term residence<\/strong> permit requires more rigorous proof of resources and insurance, but allows you to move to and settle in other member states. The choice depends on your life plans, and it pays to decide it in good time.<\/p>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n<section id=\"ausencias\">\n  <div class=\"wrap reveal\">\n    <div class=\"sec-tit\">\n      <h2>The silent enemy: absences<\/h2>\n      <p>Most long-term residence cases that fall through don&#8217;t fail for lack of years, but because of trips that broke the continuity while nobody was keeping count.<\/p>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"rejilla dos\">\n      <div class=\"tarjeta\">\n        <h3>The rule to watch<\/h3>\n        <ul class=\"lista\">\n          <li>No more than six consecutive months outside Spain.<\/li>\n          <li>No more than ten cumulative months over the whole five-year period.<\/li>\n          <li>If the absences are due to duly justified work-related activity, the limit is higher.<\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"tarjeta\">\n        <h3>How to watch it without suffering<\/h3>\n        <ul class=\"lista\">\n          <li>Keep a log of every departure and every return, with stamps or tickets.<\/li>\n          <li>Keep evidence of your life in Spain: payslips, municipal registration, school, lease, bills.<\/li>\n          <li>Before a long trip, do the maths: a single trip can use up the margin for the whole five years.<\/li>\n        <\/ul>\n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n    <div class=\"tarjeta oro\">\n      <h3>And after long-term residence<\/h3>\n      <p>The status does not expire, but it has maintenance rules too: very prolonged absences from Spain or from the European Union can extinguish it.
