A residence designed for those who work remotely
Spain’s Law 14/2013, designed for international remote workers (digital nomads), opens two routes to this residence: you can apply for it as an authorisation from within Spain —if you are here legally, for example on a valid tourist visa— or as a visa at the Spanish consulate in your home country. Whenever possible we recommend the route from within Spain, processed by the Large Companies Unit (UGE) with a twenty-day resolution and positive administrative silence, which spares you the wait of the consular process.

What’s required

I work remotely for a company abroad. Can I move to Spain?
Yes: that’s what this route is for. It’s designed for those carrying out an activity remotely for companies based outside Spain, using only computer and telecommunication means.

Can I also invoice Spanish clients?
It depends on how you work, and this is the nuance most people miss. If you’re an employee, no: you can only work for companies outside Spain. If you’re self-employed, you can also have clients in Spain, as long as they don’t exceed 20% of your total activity.

How much do I need to earn?
The reference is the Spanish minimum wage (SMI), and it rises with how many of you come. With 2026 figures: €34,188 per year if you come alone (200% of the SMI), €12,820.50 more for the second person in the family unit (75%) and €4,273.50 more per additional member (25%). That is: €47,008.50 for two, €51,282 for three. These are gross amounts, before tax and contributions.

How do I prove that income?
With payslips or invoices from the three months before the application and a bank certificate for those same three months, stamped by the bank, matching those payslips or invoices —with the movements flagged one by one—. A balance alone isn’t enough.

How long does it last?
Here you have to tell apart two things that often get confused. The visa, requested from your country, lasts one year at most. The residence authorisation, requested once you’re already in Spain, runs up to three years and is renewed for two more. If you came on the visa and want to stay, the authorisation is requested in the 60 calendar days before it expires —it’s a window, not a soft deadline: outside it the procedure is no longer the same—.

Do I need a university degree?
Not necessarily. You can be a graduate or postgraduate of a reputable university, vocational school or business school —or show 3 years of professional experience—.

How long do I need to have been with my company?
Three months of relationship with it before filing. And the company, for its part, must have at least one year of genuine activity.

How long does it take, and how much is the fee?
The maximum decision time is 20 days and, if there’s no reply, it’s deemed granted. The fee is €73.26 for the initial application, both yours and each family member’s; it’s paid online before filing.

Can my family come?
Yes: spouse or partner, children (minors or adults who depend on you) and dependent parents, at the same time as you or later. Bear in mind each member raises the minimum income, as you saw above.
